By Isabel Di Rosa

Looking for some not-so-light reading to get you in the Halloween spirit? We’ve come up with our favorite spooky YA horror novels that are sure to haunt you… just in time for October 31st (and Friday the 13th)! Whether you’re in the mood for ghosts, zombies, monsters or sociopaths, this list has it all.

Last Harvest by Kim LiggettThe Last Harvest  by Kim Liggett
There’s something strange going on in Clay Tate’s hometown of Midland, Oklahoma. Either Clay is going insane, or something is very, very wrong. The story takes place one year after the death of Clay’s father, whose paranoia and tales about the possessed town are beginning to make sense. If you’re into devil worshippers, psychological thrillers, and books that give you goosebumps, then this one’s for you.

Last Chance by Gregg HurwitzLast Chance by Gregg Hurwitz
There are aliens. There are zombie apocalypses. And then there are aliens that cause zombie apocalypses. Sequel to The Rains (another must-read), Last Chance tells the story of Chance Rain, a fifteen-year-old with the not so small task of saving humanity. If you like this cleverly-written nightmare as much as we did, then you’re in luck: Hurwitz has written 16 other horror novels!

When I Cast Your Shadow by Sarah PorterWhen I Cast Your Shadow by Sarah Porter
Ruby has two brothers. One of them, Dashiell, is dead. When Dash chooses to possess his living siblings, Ruby and her twin brother have to reassess their relationships with him. This isn’t your typical ghost story — it’s filled with raw emotion and sibling rivalry. Author Sarah Porter says she finds “truth in the fantastic,” and this story does just that.

Nightstruck by Jenna BlackNightstruck by Jenna Black
Creepy, creepy, creepy! Nightstruck is about a girl named Beckett who accidentally lets dark magic into the world. Terrifying beings — the Nightstruck — take over Philadelphia. It’s dangerous to leave the house. We loved how vivid and beautiful the prose was, which made the book even more horrifying!

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare BlakeAnna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Read. This. Book. By the incredible author of Three Dark Crowns, this eerie and strangely romantic ghost story will have you reading through even the darkest October nights. Anna Dressed in Blood tells the story of Cas, a ghost killer who aims to hunt down the murderous ghost the locals call Anna, who wears the blood of those she has killed. Things get complicated when the ghostly girl decides to spare his life.

I Am Not a Serial Killer by Dan WellsI Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells
Before you watch the movie (96% on Rotten Tomatoes!), read the book. The first of the John Cleaver series, I Am Not A Serial Killer follows a teenage sociopath as he resists his urge to become a serial killer. A string of local murders compel John to break from his rigid schedule to investigate. Warning: this book is super dark, but well worth the read.

Good luck falling asleep!
